SOVIA

(01.10.2025 - 31.03.2027)

Social, Trustworthy Interaction with Age-Responsive AI – is an interdisciplinary research project that develops and evaluates a dialogue-based voice assistant system built on large language models (LLMs) to reduce loneliness among older adults. The system enables empathic, proactive interactions in everyday life through personalized conversational prompts (“challenges”), semantic memory modules, automated summarization of user input, and ethically designed prompt orchestration.
A four-week field trial in the homes of older adults will assess the system’s feasibility, usability, and potential effects on emotional well-being. The mixed-method evaluation combines standardized instruments (UCLA Loneliness Scale, WHOQOL-BREF, TAEG) with in-depth interviews and system usage data. SOVIA contributes to the social embedding of conversational AI in later life, offers practical insights into the design of trustworthy AI for vulnerable populations, and explores digital interventions to mitigate loneliness in aging societies.
